PADMA SHRI VIKRAMJIT SINGH SAHNEY
Mr. Vikramjit S. Sahney, Padma Shri, is a well known entrepreneur, philanthropist and social worker. He is Chairman, Sun Foundation – a charitable organisation established for the welfare of mankind. A self-made man, Mr. Sahney is engaged in diverse fields of social, cultural and humanitarian activities. He is President-International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Paris-India); International President, World Punjabi Organisation; Honorary Consul General-South Africa; Chair- SAARC CCI; Board Member- National Skill Development Corporation(NSDC); Member -Board of Trade & India Brand Equity Foundation, Govt. of India as also leading National Federations of the country like FICCI, ASSOCHAM & several others. His academic credentials include Masters in Economics as well as in Business Administration.
Mr. Sahney has dedicated himself towards creating a humane & equitable society through his CSR initiative- Sun Foundation. The projects duly recognized by NSDC include Surya Kiran – free vocational and skill development training to underprivileged women and girls; Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Campaign to raise strong concern about exacerbating sex discrimination and female feticide through awareness campaign and Public interest messages; Running skill in Govt. Drug Rehabilitation centers in Amritsar, Taran Taran & Jalundhur; TaareZameen Par – free skill development centers for disabled needy youth; Angels of Sun –: scholarship to underprivileged children; adopted Shivkarwadi & SuvidhaChawl in Mumbai under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan; extending aid to Children of poor widows, war victims, families of farmers who committed suicide in Vidharbha as also national disasters like tsunami; Sikh Heritage Multimedia Museum at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, highlighting the life of Sikh Gurus and key tenents of Sikhism through Paintings, Murals, Translites, audio/video and several others projects.
Other projects include
- Operating Mobile Diabetes Testing Unit in collaboration with Medanta Medicity.
- The foundation has also adopted economically weak students of rural areas of Punjab for integrated engineering courses at Punjabi University.
- The children of Late Col. Gurbir Singh Sarna (martyr in Kashmir insurgency) have also been adopted for first class education by Sun Foundation.
- Sun Foundation has been instrumental in setting up of ‘Widows’ Child Fund’ with corpus fund of Rs. 1 crore for education of children of poor widows.
- It had supported the launch of the movement of ‘Roko Cancer’ through integrated mobile medical services.
- Helping riot victims by arranging the marriages of their daughters.
Over the years Sun Foundation has grown and reached out to a large number of people with its dedicated and selfless service. The Foundation, through its wide range of activities, has enabled thousands of less privileged women and children of our society to live with self-reliance and dignity.
President-International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Paris-India) : as its president, Mr. Sahney is committed to promoting trade and investment, open markets for goods and services, and the free flow of capital as the ‘’World Business Organisation’’ through rightful dissemination of its core activities mainly-rule setting, dispute resolution, and policy advocacy. Since the members of ICC are themselves engaged in international business, ICC rulebook, although voluntary, govern the conduct of business across borders and have become part of international trade.
Chair, BRICS Agri Business Forum: Mr. Sahney has made observations and given presentation before the Heads of States of all BRICS Nations highlighting critical role of agriculture in ensuring food security & overall economic development of nations including employment led growth & poverty reduction. He is actively involved in deliberations involving members of BRICS Forum, within nation and other member countries.
Honorary Consul General of Republic of South Africa for Northern India: As Honorary Consul, Mr. Sahney’s responsibilities are directed towards development of commercial, economic, cultural and strategic relations between India and South Africa and also promote friendly relations between the two.
Co-Chair, Core Group on BIMSTEC:
Mr. Sahney’s emphasis is on making BIMSTEC a vital body which in sync with India’s Look East policy comes with a lot of take aways. He suggests that sectors such as eco-tourism, renewable ocean energy, aqua culture & hydrography , skill training need to be engaged in deeply. Coastal shipping & ports can be extended to neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh. He is of the view that intra-BIMSTEC Trade and Investment needs to be increased. Concerns related to the Ease of Doing Business ranking of BIMSTEC states and promotion of intra-regional trade need to be looked into; Promotion of Brand BIMSTEC is important and so is its expansion therefore, we must invite other nations by granting them observatory status. Japan has always assisted BIMSTEC and with the development of India-Japan corridor for North East, it can be considered as good partner.
Chairman – SAARC Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI), Mr. Sahney has been playing a dominant role in capacity building and creating awareness within the SAARC region. As Chair of SAARC CCI, he has had direct interactions with Prime Ministers, Commerce & Finance Ministers of SAARC Nations. He organized SAARC Economic Summit and made presentations to Finance Ministers & interacted with World Bank, ADB,IFC, FNST etc.
As Member, Indo-South Africa CEO Forum & Indo-Africa Business Council besides chairing Indo-South Africa Business Forum & Indo-Qatar Jt. Business Forum, Mr. Sahney has been dedicatedly working at enhancing economic linkages between India and the member countries. He has also chaired IOR-ARC and several other meaningful platforms. His main endeavour has been to constitute a platform to strengthen economic ties between the respective business communities and facilitate a consultative process to address the issues that might deter the progress. Mr. Sahney has also been an active participant as the Moderator & speaker on several prestigious platforms.
Member, Board of Trade, Govt. of India:
As member, Board of Trade, GOI, Mr. Sahney’s role is towards raising issues, putting forth recommendations in the evolution of regulation of domestic and foreign commerce. He is activel involved into deliberations towards the development, implementation and interpretation / review of the Acts of Trade and its navigation towards ease of doing business .
BOARD MEMBER-NATIONAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION : Here Mr. Sahney’s role is extended towards giving his valuable inputs on innovation & nationwide promotion on skill development through policy advocacy and steering participation of private sector on PPP model vis-a-vis funds, trainers and institutions besides offering large variety of jobs to the workforce, thereby creating a sustainable ecosystem for skill development at par with international standards.
Socio Cultural Interest: Mr. Sahney’s socio-cultural interests are very far-reaching. He has launched World Forum for Parliamentarians of Indian Origin with over 50 parliamentarians as its members from all over the world. The forum is an attempt to bring together parliamentarians of Indian origin to foster issues and opportunities ranging from education, youth, human rights, trade and consular services within India and in the members’ respective countries for an all inclusive growth.
- As International President, World Punjabi Organisation (WPO), a non political organization, his efforts are tailored towards strengthening socio-cultural ties with various countries such as Africa, UK, US, Canada, Thailand, Singapore and SAARC nations. WPO is spread over UK, US, Canada, UAE, South Africa, Thailand, Singapore and SAARC nations to foster social, economic and cultural bondage amongst likeminded people. WPO has led various friendship delegations of prominent Punjabi personalities overseas with friendship message. The other activities of WPO include producing or sponsoring several cultural light & sound shows to promote cultural heritage of Punjab; organising various cultural events and social projects like scholarships to students, annual world Punjabi conferences in India & abroad, organizing Guru Nanak Devji’s birthday celebrations at President House & Prime Minister’s house and many others. WPO is celebrating 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji in several countries by organizing interfaith conference, exhibition, light and sound show, kirtan darbar etc. jointly with Indian Missions abroad.
Entrepreneur: Mr. Sahney is Chairman of Sun Group (SUN), a leading international trading conglomerate focused on fertilizers, minerals, agri-commodities and Joint Ventures. The Group’s business interests span globally across Middle East, Africa, China, Europe & Latin America.
Mr. Sahney has been conferred with the honour of Padma Shri by the Hon’ble President of India and International Peace Award by the Hon’ble President of Mauritius. Some other awards to his credit are: “Raja Ram Mohan Roy award for women upliftment”; “Mother India International Award, 1992”; Arch of India Gold Award for 1993; Rashtriya Gaurav Award 2004; Community Service Award by Asian WHO’s WHO International, UK; Millennium Sikh Award by Deputy Prime Minister of India etc.
