In our country the girl child is a victim of gender discrimination and female foeticide is one of the gravest concerns facing society. GIRLS ARE PRECIOUS, TAKE DELIGHT IN DAUGHTERS – “Vikramjit S. Sahney”
Without recognizing the feminine aspect of divinity, one cannot claim to know GOD. To recognize the feminine it is necessary to restore wholeness, completeness and universality. SAVE THE GIRL CHILD
March 10,2012 at Hotel Le-Meridien, New Delhi, Sun Foundation kick-started a campaign with Priyanka Chopra, Miss World and bollywood Diva who has made a niche for herself with landmark achievements. The campaign started with release a documentary, public interest message & release of a heart touching Video based on song sung by vikram sahney on Save the girl Child.
GENDER JUSTICE – Objective of Sun Foundation:
We live in a world where God’s most divine creation – the Girl Child – is a victim of gender discrimination. Such is the irony of fate that the hand that rocks the cradle, the procreator and mother of tomorrow, is today one of the gravest concerns facing humanity.
She is starved, subjected to child labour, denied education and exposed to social evils such as child marriage. Her life is seen as a burden rather than a celebration. Often a Girl Child is left abandoned in trash cans or in back alley to die. If she does manage to survive, she is condemned to a life of despair.
It is mainly because of social stigma that a Girl Child is having to face several challenges such as female feticide, child labour, slavery, her right to education, child marriage, molestation and many more. Wrought with discrimination and prejudiced by rituals, our society has, since time immemorial, dealt with Girl Child wrongly and roughly.
The macabre scenario of discarded female fetuses in India is the handiwork of the brain of a human being. Unless the citizens of India themselves wake up to the need, the evil of female foeticide and other such malpractices targeting the Indian Girl Child shall not be done away with.
The positive steps that Sun Foundation envisages in its campaign “Save the Girl Child” are :
AWARNESS PROGRAMMES:
DOCUMENTARIES & PUBLIC INTEREST MESSAGES VIDEO SONG (to run on cinema halls, T.V. channels, public gathering etc.)
EFFORTS TOWARDS AWARENESS PROGRAMME:
The Video song ‘MA DI KUKH VICHON MANGA MEIN DUAVAN, KE BABULA TU WASADA RAWEN’ reflects universal sentiment of all daughters for their fathers. Daughters are forever praying for wellbeing of their parents and only seek love and blessings of their family. It is due to abhorical greed of societal fundamentalists that they are sacrificed at several stages of their lives and also before they are born. The song is a heart rendering depiction of Girl Child in most captivating voice of Vikramjit ji.
In this regard, last year Vikramjit S. Sahney had produced a music album,”Tere Ishq Nachaya” supporting the cause. Through this music album, the rich heritage of Punjab was promoted with the very definite aim to support the noble cause of saving the Girl Child. Vikramjit S. Sahney contributed his entire share from the sale proceeds of the music album towards this noble cause.
Besides this album, Sun Foundation has also made a short documentary & a public interest messages on 'Save the Girl Child' that is running on various national & regional channels, cinema halls, community gatherings etc. This campaign will surely help in bringing about a change in perception of clogged mindsets in the society and march towards respectable human values with regard to the Girl Child.

Priyanka roots for the girl child
Expressing concern over the fact that female foeticide continues to take place in urban and rural parts of the country, Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra on Saturday urged couples not to go in for abortion when they find out that they are soon to become parents of a baby girl. Launching the “Save a Girl Child” campaign in the Capital, Ms. Chopra said: “Today I have a lot of things to say and I am overwhelmed with feelings. After watching a documentary on the need to save the girl child, I am wondering what if my parents had decided not to have me in this world. I would not have been able to achieve whatever fame and accolades I have been honoured with. It is sad and shocking that even in the 21 {+s} {+t} Century the girl child is being killed even before being born.”
Stating that her parents always believed that she could accomplish everything that any boy can, Ms. Chopra said: “Earlier I thought that female foeticide was occurring only in rural areas of the country. But this is not the case as even couples in urban areas go in for pre-natal sex determination with the intention of preventing female births. My mother, a gynaecologist, has always urged couples not to go in for abortion if they find that they are about to have a baby girl. Unfortunately in our country the moment a doctor informs that it is a girl child, her fate is sealed.”
Sun Foundation head Vikramjit Singh Sahney, who has produced a two-minute documentary and a public interest message delivered by Ms. Chopra on the need to save the girl child, lamented that with modern medical technologies within easy reach, selective abortion and sex selection are becoming quite common.

NEW DELHI: Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra kicked off the Save Girl Child campaign in New Delhi. Chopra, who received the National Award for her role in the movie 'Fashion' on Friday, appeared very enthusiastic over the initiative of 'The Sun Foundation'. “The campaign which is kick-started by 'The Sun Foundation' is very important in todays scenario. We are aware but the conditioning, which we had till now, teaches us that the girls are not very important and the male child is always wanted,” said Priyanka Chopra.
“This thinking should be eradicated. To know that if you give your girl child an opportunity then she can develop her potential, that she can be as successful as a boy,” she added.
The Sun Foundation is a charitable institution that is committed towards changing the mindset of the Indian society with respect to the Girl Child. Despite laws banning tests to determine the sex of an unborn child, the killing of female foetuses continues in some regions of India where a preference for sons runs deep. In most parts of India, sons are viewed as breadwinners, who will look after their parents and carry on the family name, but daughters are viewed as financial liabilities for whom they will have to pay substantial dowries to get married off.
